‘It’s the crowd-pleaser of wines’

If it were human, it’d be that charismatic type who you want to be around because they make you feel sunshine-y in your heart.

Like an adorable puppy or new leather sandals, it’s incredibly easy to love this pinot gris {unlike some humans we know.}

This super-sippable dry white wine that is insanely, figuratively hot right now and not at all cheugy. (See how we got the lingo?)

Being a much-loved variety, it’s perfect for those bring-a-bottle events, parties and family dos. Serve this baby chilled alongside a cheese platter, spicy Asian dishes or (our favourite) seafood. Vegans will love it with a deep veggie curry or vegan burrito bowl.

Ps. Like our pinot noir, our pinot gris is also the sixth most popular Victorian wine of its type in Australia. #humblebrag alert.

Why choose 6Ft6 Pinot Gris?

The cocktails

The wine spritzer has enjoyed a resurgence over the last few years.  These easy wine cocktails are low in alcohol, so they’re ideal for day drinking, minus the nasty hangover.

The DMAC effect

Our winemaker, Dwayne (aka DMAC), is one helluva fusspot when it comes to quality, and it totally shows. We won’t get too technical, but Dwayne has a persnickety way of wanting things [just so]. And you know what? You can’t argue with results. Every business needs a stickler for quality like DMAC and we adore his attention to detail that makes our wines oh-so amazing.

The fruit

Pinot gris is one of Australia’s favourite white wines, and shows no sign of losing its popularity. The cool climate and limestone-rich soil of the Moorabool valley is the perfect place to grow the grape, producing a light, dry flavour.

The terroir

(Terroir means soil, topography, and climate — fancy.) For farmers, the land is life, and we hit the jackpot with our vineyard in Geelong. We combine this impeccable fruit from the Strathbogie region to give us a great consistency of flavour. This means that you can be confident in the flavours to expect from us, year after year.

The fun

For us, wine is about enjoyment — sharing a glass or two to connect with your special humans, and spoil yourself. Whether you are relaxing after a long day or partying with friends, we have the wine to match. We’re not about being snooty, inaccessible or using confusing language. We’re just an everyday farming family, making great wine and enjoying a few laughs along the way. Cheers to that, hey?

Vegan wine

Vegans, raise your glasses, because all of the 6Ft6 range is vegan, i.e. it’s c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y free of animal products. You’d think wine, being made from grapes, is always vegan — but not so. Learn more about it here, on this creatively titled article ‘Is all wine vegan friendly?’

The planet

We want to care for this planet — it’s the only one with wine! Sustainability has been at the forefront of our business since we started in 1982. Working daily on the land, we see first-hand the effects of climate change, and it’s devastating. We continually make improvements to ensure our footprint is kept to a minimum by:

  • replanting trees on our property—we have planted over 10,000 trees since 1990
  • using 100% recyclable packaging, which means our cartons are a little bit fugly but a lot more sustainable
  • investing heavily in irrigation systems and vineyard treatments such as straw and natural soils to reduce unnecessary water usage

So, when you buy from us, you buy a wine that’s as good for the planet as possible.

Tasting Notes

A lovely balanced white suitable for all occasions. Primary fruit characters of white peach and apples are followed with a hint of spice and honeysuckle, offering layers of depth and intrigue. The palate is juicy, round with a creamy, textured finish. More honey and pear notes are followed with a slight hint of crisp natural acidity which keep the wine fresh and vivacious.

With hints of pear and citrus, this versatile wine is a great combo with everyone’s favourite picnic food, the good old chicken sandwich.  For our vegan friends, it is also great with cucumber and cashew nut and dill cheese.

If you are hosting friends for dinner, our pinot gris pairs well with all white meats i.e. chicken or seafood. Perhaps a salt and pepper calamari salad… Drool!

Pick of the bunch: Fondue, Camembert, Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella, Chevre

The Vegan Dairy: Herb Garlic Boursin

How about a little 90s hip hop?

Wine cocktails are back in vogue, and we’re SO on board. These classy, upmarket cocktails are nothing on what grandma used to drink. We’ve got a selection of fresh modern wine cocktails and spritzer recipes for you to enjoy here.

The season kicked off with substantial June rainfall, typical of previous years, ushering in a cold and wet winter. Abundant winter rains maintained optimal soil moisture levels, fostering successful budburst and early growth stages. Sheep were employed for weed control, and vineyard pruning was completed by mid-August.

Budburst occurred later than usual, signalling a delayed harvest. Growth stages lagged behind by about two weeks on average. Despite persistent rain, diligent disease control efforts, ensured healthy vines, although certain blocks posed challenges due to heavy rainfall.

Consistent July to November rainfall sustained high soil moisture, requiring irrigation only in January. Limited extreme heat and sunny February weather, coupled with cool nights, facilitated ripening. In a typical Austin’s vintage, the first pick would have been in mid-February. However, in 2023, the harvest commenced with Pinot Gris on March 10th.

Despite the challenges faced during the growing season, the 2023 vintage at Austin’s winery proved to be another year of exceptional quality.
