BOLD & VENTURESOME, RICH & ALLURING

97 points (Gold)  & special value status - James Halliday, Wine Companion 2019

Named after the Austins’ first son, Spencer Shiraz represents the pinnacle of fine wine within our collection. An elegant cool climate wine, Spencer Shiraz is rich with fruit cake aromas and enhanced with an array of spices such as nutmeg, clove and black pepper. It has a plush and velvety palate, with lingering dark plum and blueberry flavours and just enough savoury, fine-grain tannins to provide structural framework to the richness.

Every order over $99 includes FREE delivery Australia-wide.

Vintage Conditions

2016 was an unusual season with budburst commencing two weeks earlier than normal. This early pattern continued all season from flowering, through to veraison and ultimately harvest brought on by the prevailing dry and mild winter conditions. Spring and summer were warm too but thankfully with not much extreme heat. The lack of rain and consequent dry soils throughout the course of the season made irrigation essential.

Vinification

Handpicked parcels of the best sections of the shiraz vineyard were de-stemmed and conveyed to open fermenters. A small 15 per cent portion of whole bunches were set aside for co-fermentation with the destemmed fruit, which provides the structural elements and spicy notes to the final blend. After pressing, the wine was aged in concrete eggs to slow down the aging process and enhance texture. After nine months sitting on fine lees, the wine was racked to fine grained French oak barrels for another 9 months before the final blend was put together, cross flow filtered and bottled in October 2017.

The Austin's Vineyard

The Austins vineyard is located in Geelong’s Moorabool Valley sub-region, nestled between Geelong and Ballarat. The Moorabool Valley is steeped in history – some 20,000 years ago it sat on the bottom of the sea only to be reclaimed as land by millennia of volcanic activity.

The legacy is the tough limestone and basalt base which forms this region’s unique terroir. Early settlers saw the potential of viticulture and by the 1870s Geelong was the largest vineyard region in Australia before phylloxera changed the course of history.

The Austin family purchased the property ‘Greenbanks’ in 1995 in the rolling hills of the Moorabool Valley with a single-minded vision of producing world class wine and planted the 62-hectare vineyard in 1996 of which 37 hectares is Pinot Noir, one of the bigger single plantings of Pinot in Australia.

Moorabool Valley’s cool climate is largely continental in nature but still moderated to some extent by its proximity to the ocean, providing perfect conditions to grow world-class pinot noir and chardonnay, as well as some lovely riesling, shiraz and pinot gris.

The vines are all planted north – south, trained vertically and the canopies managed to provide sufficient light and air into the fruit zone, maximising quality and vine health. Judicious irrigation is applied during the growing season to maintain healthy vine growth to assist even ripening.

Awards and Ratings

97 points - James Halliday, Wine Companion 2019

James Halliday ReviewThe far greater quality of this wine than its sibling is in part due to fruit selection in the vineyard, and a more complex vinification, the key points 9 months maturation in French oak (35% new), preceded by 9 months maturation in concrete eggs. You skip over the 15% alcohol, the wine finer and more intense, and extreme length to its spice-ridden black cherry and licorice fruits.

Where should I store my wine?

In a cool place is great! A constant temperate of 14 degrees is the optimal conditions. The most important thing is to have no sudden fluctuation in temperature. So, under the bed, bottom of a cupboard, in a cellar, etc. Not in an attic.

                Where is 6Ft6 wine made?

90% of our wines are proudly single vineyard (we source Prosecco and some Pinot Gris from the King Valley), meaning our wine is grown, produced and bottle onsite based out of our home in the Moorabool Valley. Read more about our vineyard here.

How long will the wine last?

Tricky question as this is very wine dependent, although, luckily for us both, we make our wines ready to consume. For our red wines (Pinot Noir and Shiraz), you may gain some benefit from cellaring for up to 10 years in storage.

What if I don’t like the wine?

Unfortunately, we can’t refund based on taste (i.e. you typically like sweet Moscato though you bought a dry Chardonnay), however if you feel your wine isn’t up to its usual standards and not worth the investment, please let me know and we will happily provide you with a refund.
