Sitting on the ocean floor some 20,000 years ago, only to be reclaimed as land by millennia of volcanic activity, Geelong’s Moorabool Valley sub-region is made up of a tough limestone and basalt base, which forms this sub-region’s unique terroir; providing ideal free-draining soil for our grapevines.

Moorabool Valley’s cool climate is largely continental by nature but still moderated to some extent by its proximity to the ocean, providing perfect conditions to grow world-class wines. All vines are planted north–south, trained vertically, and canopies are managed to provide sufficient light and air into the fruit zone, maximising quality and vine health. Judicious irrigation is applied during the growing season to maintain healthy vine growth to assist even ripening, which is the key to quality fruit.

Sourced entirely from our vineyard, fruit was picked in the cool of night and largely de-stemmed to open fermenters for a warm soak before ferment kicks in with indigenous yeast. Berries receive gentle maceration during ferment, pressed lightly after drying, then settled for a few days before racking to well-seasoned, tight-grain French oak barrels of which 40 per cent are new. This leads to better fruit/ oak flavour integration. After malolactic fermentation in barrel, SO2 is added for colour stabilisation. The wine is kept in a cool temperature-controlled cellar and regularly topped until the following January, when each barrel is tasted – looking for only the best barrels to be blended together. In 2018, the clonal mix was 46 per cent MV6, 28 per cent 114 and 26 per cent D2V6. Wine was blended, filtered and bottled in February 2019.

With plenty of moisture in the ground and moderate weather conditions through spring and early summer, the vines enjoyed ideal growing conditions early. Flowering in November was quick, and the ensuing berry set was good, despite heavy rainfall late November. Yields were average with plenty of bunches, though lower in weight. A relentlessly hot summer and minimal rain made an early start to vintage with swift completion. Pinot picking commenced on 22 February 2018, with the last batch picked on 9 March 2018. Most batches came in around 24.0 brix and lower than average acidity at approximately 5.5 g/L. The average yield was moderate at 4.5 t/ha.
