“Being in sixth place, it feels like high school all over again”

Say hello to our bestselling wine AND the sixth-highest* selling Victorian pinot noir. It feels good, because it means we are — wait for it — popular.  *flicks hair* That’s a feeling our sixth-place getting high school selves really appreciate.

So when you choose this versatile pinot noir, you know you are totally in with the cool crowd. The ones who snuck behind the shelter sheds for a bit o’ nonsense.

And more importantly, you’re gonna enjoy a top quality, yet well priced, smooth-drinking pinot noir that pairs beautifully with most dishes, especially anything mushroomy or cheesy.

Why is 6Ft6 the crowd favourite?

The DMAC effect

Our winemaker, Dwayne (aka DMAC), is one helluva fusspot when it comes to quality, and it totally shows. We won’t get too technical, but Dwayne has a persnickety way of wanting things [just so]. And you know what? You can’t argue with results. Every business needs a stickler for quality like DMAC and we adore his attention to detail that makes our wines oh-so amazing.

The fruit

We Aussies have a long-held tradition of taking inspiration from global trends and then beating them at their own game. And it’s the same with our pinot noir. We take a variety of clones from Europe and Central America and ensure our own skillfully blended, easy-drinking well-balanced pinot noirs that make the world take notice.

The terroir

(Terroir means soil, topography, and climate — fancy.) For farmers, the land is life, and we hit the jackpot with our vineyard in Geelong. We combine this impeccable fruit from the Strathbogie region to give us a great consistency of flavour. This means that you can be confident in the flavours to expect from us, year after year.

The fun

For us, wine is about enjoyment — sharing a glass or two to connect with your special humans, and spoil yourself. Whether you are relaxing after a long day or partying with friends, we have the wine to match. We’re not about being snooty, inaccessible or using confusing language. We’re just an everyday farming family, making great wine and enjoying a few laughs along the way. Cheers to that, hey?

Vegan wine

Vegans, raise your glasses, because all of the 6Ft6 range is vegan, i.e. it’s c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y free of animal products. You’d think wine, being made from grapes, is always vegan — but not so. Learn more about it here, on this creatively titled article ‘Is all wine vegan friendly?’

The planet

We want to care for this planet — it’s the only one with wine! Sustainability has been at the forefront of our business since we started in 1982. Working daily on the land, we see first-hand the effects of climate change, and it’s devastating. We continually make improvements to ensure our footprint is kept to a minimum by:

  • replanting trees on our property—we have planted over 10,000 trees since 1990
  • using 100% recyclable packaging, which means our cartons are a little bit fugly but a lot more sustainable
  • investing heavily in irrigation systems and vineyard treatments such as straw and natural soils to reduce unnecessary water usage

So, when you buy from us, you buy a wine that’s as good for the planet as possible.

Tasting Notes

This is a graceful and elegant pinot noir, vibrant and easy drinking. Raspberries, strawberries, plums and a hint of spice are the prominent aromatics. The tannins are soft and supple, bringing
roundness on the palate and balance to the fruit weight. A delightful example of a fruit forward pinot noir that will leave you wanting more.

Made to drink and enjoy, we recommend 10 minutes in the fridge before opening on a hot summer day or serve at room temperature all year round. Our top food pairings would be grilled salmon in a Beurre Blanc Sauce with Sweet Potato Chips and a crisp Iceberg salad. A duck salad with rocket and pear is a refreshing change on the classic duck and pinot pairing. A mushroom and thyme pizza is our go-to veg match.

Pick of the bunch: Compte, Brie, Camembert

Vegan pick: The Vegan Dairy,  Red Bell Pepper

The Moorabool Valley is continental in nature, close to the Southern Ocean and dry in summer. This unique cool climate gives our wines full ripeness and beautiful finesse. We have 90 acres of pinot noir which include seven different pinot noir clones, each bringing a unique flavour. When combined, they produce a well-rounded wine with great depth of flavour, good structure, balance and aromatic richness.

The season kicked off with substantial June rainfall, typical of previous years, ushering in a cold and wet winter. Abundant winter rains maintained optimal soil moisture levels, fostering successful budburst and early growth stages. Sheep were employed for weed control, and vineyard pruning was completed by mid-August.

Budburst occurred later than usual, signalling a delayed harvest. Growth stages lagged behind by about two weeks on average. Despite persistent rain, diligent disease control efforts, ensured healthy vines, although certain blocks posed challenges due to heavy rainfall.

Consistent July to November rainfall sustained high soil moisture, requiring irrigation only in January. Limited extreme heat and sunny February weather, coupled with cool nights, facilitated ripening. In a typical Austin’s vintage, the first pick would have been in mid-February. However, in 2023, the harvest commenced with Pinot Gris on March 10th.

Despite the challenges faced during the growing season, the 2023 vintage at Austin’s winery proved to be another year of exceptional quality.
